Debate. Are Apprenticeships worth it?
So you’ve probably heard by now all the psycho babble by clueless politicians who want to encourage you back to work to jump at the chance to do voluntary or apprenticeship work.
Is it worthwhile or are you simply being exploited. While Politicians are completely deluded from the reality normal folk, known as commoners or peasants, have to live in, the landscape is entirely different.
The case for being worthwhile lists benefits such as learning and contributing. But what if you already are entirely skilled and can do the job but are downplayed in order to get some ‘numbers’ on your CV? With no end in sight and not one willing to offer graduates or non grads hoping to break into the market a position whatsoever the future is nowhere in sight. Gaining this experience, you might say, is a delusion. Employers are using you for free labour to pawn you off after two weeks and not pay you a dime. They are laughing. And what experience do you boast of? Something you knew how to do yet they would not let you play with the proper toys? Did you spend two weeks to become a tea lady?
Every time you work you are encouraging a free system of instability and broken implementation to flourish. Many will not even give you a reference, so when you put it on your CV/Resume it is as good as your word against their’s. Many who have been in interviews will know that when there is no support from an employing house, your claims fall on thin air. In such a short space of time to impress, you have now become warranted in the interviewer’s mind as a lackey and thus, will not be given any position.
For those that do give the benefit of the doubt, you will likely receive a minimal offer or start on the low pecking order which does nothing for your skills, proves you are undervalued and you will always be passed by for promotion as the dogsbody.
With such small quantities of apprenticeships/internships available and not in the correct sectors either, the world of free work is implausible. In an economic recession with growing rental costs, education fees or energy bills constricting the wage packet, to which many apprenticeships do not offer, is simply a fantasy. It all sounds great, yet the reality is the system is flawed. Filled with underlays of corruption, abuse, no payment and no skill development, the notion of apprenticeships is a sham. I want them to be worthwhile. I would like to say that it’s a great thing, but when so many cannot do it the right way or not bother to care about some poor sap trying to be somebody we know can waste two weeks of free labour is diabolical. But hey, those people at the top will never have to go through any level of hardship or struggle, will they? Especially when they are simply born into their jobs with a snobbish misunderstanding of how the sectors of such working houses shut many out instead.
Then there is the troubling placement of all. Location. If your not in the hub of London, for example, which doesn’t have many for that matter, you haven’t much chance of getting one. Then imagine those who are going for the placement. You think you can get in over say 1 in a 100? With an overcrowded job market and an inaccuracy to understand healthy competition to grow an economy, many simply want to take your ideas, writing, or anything else you can contribute and steal them for their own bylines. Your hard work is often taken from under your nose, sent you home with a good job pat on the back and without your knowledge take your stuff and publish, use or claim the glory or targets for themselves.
So are you better off now? Has your bank balance increased? Has your CV now been upgraded with some experience? Have you developed your role further? Have you gained any useful contacts? Any references to boast of? Can you honestly say, all in all, the most important thing of all, that you enjoyed your work experience/apprenticeship? Have you simply become the office laughing stock? Good luck for the future. Once they have finished with you for two weeks, they get the next one in from the ever convoluted conveyor belt of capitalism. Free work without pay is called Workfare. Or slave labour if you prefer.
With the government’s own unpleased admission the situation is “endemic” there has been no efforts to continue them. Don’t worry. I am certain we shall see the Tory Party start boasting of this in their pledges for the General Election next year int he UK only because I mentioned it. If I didn’t they would not have considered it, which should highlight you should not be duped or exploited by false promises.
Then after you leave the internship, what do you do next? You are back to square one. Clueless of your next step. If you can do your own PR for nightclubs, build a portfolio, or find unique ways that benefit you then do so. Though not everyone has this foresight or direction. This is why apprenticeships are in existence. It is up to those who have the capabilities to extend the earning and learning hand. As with a regular position, employers will have to work with them. Apprenticeships are exactly the same.
When a realistic offer is on the table, you should take it and employers should allow themselves to open up and allow a negotiation with the trainee. This benefits business and companies and with the lack of many they should think long and hard on an apprenticeship funding, charity or own implementation of a program to encourage the option.

Aspire, achieve and be great. The foolish illusion and complete facade of the apprenticeship is revealed.
Are you prepared to be the dogsbody who gains no experience, no finance, no job and no career? The glamorous television adverts are a sham. There is no future in free apprenticeships. Those that do pay have quota’s based on young ages, ethnicity and gender specializations. It’s a convoluted mess that serves no purpose. Perhaps all rich people should set up or donate to them or offer their own apprenticeship house by finding companies to liaise with? Currently the service is not fit for purpose and free apprenticeships should be abolished. Real career opportunities should be available. The market has been very closed, selfish, abusive and irrespective for years, including centuries. To move forward, we should be Politicians, especially Conservative are deluded in the fact that free work labelled as apprenticeships are helping people and those who don’t do so are lazy. Charming. Or spiteful, vindictive and out of touch if you prefer.
The UK, among the rest of many worlds does not pay. The world, let alone any economy cannot function this way. Man’s greed will eventually cost him dearly. If you fail to pay people what they are worth, the economy wont grow. It is not rocket science.
These should be rolled out worldwide to continue the fact that big companies must pay up and respect the workforce if they really want the best for a future. The corporate and business world needs a fresh kick up the backside. Maybe it should have just hired people to begin with?
Figure it out and make it work, or in ten years time riots and public anarchy will break this entire landscape. All the corporations and politicians will be hit. Whose the really lazy ones now?
Deal with it. Fair equality and real job prospects, not a PR statement that sure sounds good and offers absolutely nothing. People wont put up with it forever.
